Left-wing Organisation Zminijietna, in a statement on Saturday, insisted that, “Workers’ Day should enhance union representatives, social movements and progressive parliamentarians to push forward the introduction in Malta of a Mandatory Union.”

Zminijietna added that “in a unionised workplace, the standard of living of workers will improve, and the fight against precarious jobs will intensify.”

“Additionally, low-income employees should be the first group of workers to benefit from this measure,” continued Zminijietna – Voice of the Left.

“With regards to an adequate minimum income, Zminijietna urges the Government to move towards this direction, for a living income, backed by economic and social studies,” it said.

Zminijietna concluded by saying that “another issue that workers are facing nowadays is the problem of affordable accommodation. Government is doing a lot in this sector, but we demand that the concept of housing co-ops should be explored.”

“With regards to asylum seekers, the Government should legislate to give rights to this minority for more stability and social protection”.

“Zminjietna views positively measures such as free public transport, free child care services, free Sec and Matsec examinations, stability in food prices, and affordable and stable energy prices. Such measures will improve the living conditions of families in Malta.”
