A recreation area in Xewkija, which includes a new playing field accessible to all, has been inaugurated by Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri, together with Mayor of Xewkija Hubert Saliba and Councillors

This project was carried out with a total value of around €255,000 financed by the Development Planning Fund.

The works in this area, which covers 1,500 square metres, included, among others, the installation of more efficient and sustainable lights; CCTV cameras; change of paving, planting of approximately 500 trees and shrubs which were added to the existing ones; play and physical training equipment; new benches, and new waste containers. The ground is also specially made for the safety of children.

During a visit to the place, Minister Clint Camilleri said that this much needed project was made possible to the Council thanks to the funds given by the Development Planning Fund which is operated by the Planning Authority.

While praising the Xewkija Local Council for this initiative, the Minister encouraged more Councils to continue investing in their villages on projects in favour of the community.

Mayor of Xewkija Hubert Saliba, explained that the playing field is accessible to everyone. “The equipment is suitable for people with special needs, such as a trampoline that can be climbed on with a wheelchair as well as sensory equipment. There is a short walking track and gym equipment to do some exercise. Along with the modern swings there are also the old-style games.

The project was given the name of Augustine Dingli Garden for Augustine Dingli, better known as Augustine, who was appointed as the first Mayor of Xewkija.
