The Gharb Local Council said that it is strongly opposing Planning Application PA/02994/24 for the construction of an old people’s home comprising 68 units.

The application being put forward by architect Alex Bigeni for his client Emanuel Joseph Farrugia, is – ”To clear site and carry out excavations as may be required, to construct an old people’s home (Class 2A) on 3 floors and receded floor and 2 basement levels. Old people’s home to include 68 rooms, 29 car spaces, chapel and mortuary, clinic, office, dining area and gym for use by the residents and support staff.”

The Council pointed out that the proposed site for this project is primarily situated in an Outside Development Zone (ODZ), also taking up agricultural land.

The Council added that it is ”’very concerned that the height of the planned building will have a significant visual impact, disrupting the surrounding urban zone and altering its character and that of the village of Gharb.”

Moreover, it argued that ”the development would lead to significantly increased traffic congestion and have a negative effect on many of the already narrow streets in the area.”

Gharb Local Council is appealing to the public to sign the petition against this application in the link: https://shorturl.at/Jl0Fr People can also sign the petition at the Council office.

”Every objection counts,” the Council said. The closing date to sign the Council petition is the 14th of June.

Representations can also be made through the PA website by clicking here.
