”By changing the Local Plan of 2006 for Gozo and Comino, we will ensure that the area of Hondoq ir-Rummien is now protected,” said Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri.
The final Hondoq Plan Review, which we will bring before the Parliamentary Committee, will see a change in the local plan so as to eliminate the possibility of an individual or company submitting an application for development to take place in this area the Minister said.
A saga of more than 20 years has now come to an end so that the area of Hondoq can continue to be enjoyed by everyone, he added.
The Government declared this site as a Special Conservation Area earlier in the year. Minister Camilleri said, ”this is the highest level of protection and environmental protection offered by the environmental laws of our country. The Government is legally and officially recognising the natural importance of this area by protecting the area where we find rich biodiversity with many different habitats, such as the heath, as well as protected species, such as the mature carob and olive trees.”
Mayor of Qala Paul Buttigieg said that the dream of many, after a legal struggle of more than 20 years, has now become a reality as the beach and its surroundings will continue to be enjoyed by the public after the final document was signed today before it comes before the Parliamentary Committee.
He thanked the Government, the entities and all those concerned who worked on this case which has now been concluded.
