A Preliminary Market Consultation has been launched to turn Pjazza l-Assedju ta’ Ghawdex, Victoria, from a parking area into a car park on several levels complemented by a open green space.
The Gozo Regional Development Authority said it is launching the consultation in order to determine the feasibility of a private-public-partnership on this potential development.
Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri said that this is another proposal that will be studied so that eventually those interested can submit their offer to build and operate this facility in the heart of Victoria.
“We believe that this area, spread over an area of 3,100 square metres, has the potential to serve a much greater function than that of today where it is currently being used as a parking area. Through the proposal of parking on several levels and a green space above, we believe that we are maximising this site while addressing many challenges present in the City of Victoria,” he said.
Mario Borg, Chief Executive of the GRDA, said that the Authority is working on this project as it is part of the Regional Strategy for Gozo. This process closes on the 16th of September.
Way back in 2009, the then PN Ministry for Gozo proposed this same area as a new site for the Gozo Law Courts, a proposal that met with opposition from residents and others. Please see the links below:
Then again under a Labour Government in 2016, the Minister for Gozo at the time Anton Refalo announced that the Planning Commission had approved plans for underground parking and new Law Courts. This proposal never materialised…..
