Just before midnight last night, the Nature Trust – FEE (Malta) Gozo Section volunteers on duty at Ramla l-Hamra in Gozo noticed a turtle swimming very close to the shoreline.
They immediately called the NTM coordinators, who went straight to the site in order to assess the situation. ERA – Environment & Resources Authority officials were also called on site, and after around an hour, they said that “mama came to shore to lay her nest.”
It’s the same mama that laid a nest on Sunday, the 28th of July. NTM said that after she finished the nesting process, she was scanned, and her microchip number came up.
This eighth nest not only breaks the record of the number of concurrent nests, but it also breaks the record of total number of nests in one season.
The ERA said that this active nesting season is a win for biodiversity and conservation efforts. If anyone sees a turtle nesting, please keep noise and light to a minimum and report it immediately. ERA: 2292 3500 or NTM: 9999 9505.
Anyone who wishes to volunteer at the nests, kindly send an email on turtle.ramla@gmail.com for Gozo and turtle.naturetrust@gmail.com for Malta.
The Wildlife Rehab Project is carried out by Nature Trust – FEE Malta and supported by ERA, Lottoland Malta , Melita and Megastore.com.mt
