Hondoq notification confirm it as Special Conservation Area – Site of National Importance

Over the past few days several notifications have been posted around the area of Hondoq ir-Rummien in Qala.

Mayor of the locality Paul Buttigieg said that, these notifications confirm that the Hondoq ir-Rummien area, which has been under threat for the last 22 years, has now been included in the list of protected sites…..’Special Conservation Area – Site of National Importance.’

Earlier this month the Planning Authority confirmed that the area, including the abandoned quarry, is now safeguarded from any form of future development following the publication of the approved policy for the area.Hondoq notification confirm it as Special Conservation Area - Site of National ImportanceThe new policy enables the afforestation of the site which will focus on creating a biodiverse environment that attracts wildlife and regenerates the entire habitat. The Authority stressed that “monocultures will not be permitted.”

Buttigieg said that he was “delighted to read that finally Hondoq is officially considered as an area of national importance, because from the very beginning, my goal always was that Hondoq continues to be enjoyed by everyone. Now I am very content that my dream and that of many others is being fulfilled.”
