Rangers from the Malta Ranger Unit retrieved a shot Eleonora’s Falcon on Friday night at Natura 2000 site -Blata tal-Melh

The Rangers said following a long trek down the cliff side in pitch dark, the bird (a scarce migratory bird of prey) was spotted injured behind a rock.

The bird was brought up to Fomm ir-Rih and handed over to BirdLife Malta to take to the Government vet, it said.

The MRU reiterated its call to Ministers Miriam Dalli and Clint Camilleri ( Eco-Gozo A Better Gozo ) to address the lack of resources given to environmental protection. “Until that is done, the decline in biodiversity is on you,” it said.

“Our Rangers have had enough seeing these protected species poached during hours when environmental police aren’t around, or where there are none (Gozo),” stated the MRU.

The Malta Ranger Unit also noted to the European Commission “how badly the Maltese Natura 2000 sites are protected.”
