The new MRI machine has been inaugurated at the Gozo General Hospital, with an investment of €3 million.
Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela said that this new 3.0 Tesla MRI machine is the most modern MRI that exists in the country.
He added that from March until today, through the portable MRI machine in Gozo, approximately 2,700 MRIs were performed, with approximately 70% of the tests being on Gozitan patients.
The Minister explained that this new machine will improve the radiology service offered in Gozo and allows detailed diagnosis in various parts of the body as well as allowing specialised MRIs, including MRIs of the brain, heart, prostate, spinal cord, liver, and pancreas. It will also help to detect tumours at an advanced stage.
Minister Abela thanked the multidisciplinary team that will be running this service and said how now the Gozitans will be able to be served in Gozo itself without having to cross to Malta to undergo this medical test.

This new Equipment shows how Gozitans & Gozo in general benefit from having the Health Ministry run by a Gozitan. Previously under all Health Ministries Gozo was always left behind or when equipment used at Maltese Hospitals were not needed any more or passed their life. I do feel that the Hon Minister of Health is doing an excellent job and is immolating the general health of both the Gozitans & Maltese Patients.
Well done. I hope that the Minister keeps this improvment in the coming future as well during his legislation.
