The Medical Association of Malta has said that two distinguished Maltese physicians, Dr. Martin V. Balzan and Dr. Arthur G. Felice, have been awarded the prestigious Gold Decoration of Honour by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) for their exceptional contributions to European medicine.

Dr. Martin V. Balzan, M.D. (Melit.), F.R.C.P. (Lond.), F.E.F.I.M., has made significant impacts in multiple areas of European medicine. As President of the UEMS Section of Pneumology from 2010 to 2022, he played a crucial role in the recognition of the European pulmonology curriculum and establishing important agreements between UEMS and the European Respiratory Society.

On a national level, Dr. Balzan’s leadership was instrumental in reversing Malta’s medical brain drain. He spearheaded the implementation of specialist recognition legislation and the establishment of postgraduate training programs.

Dr. Balzan’s academic contributions are equally noteworthy, with 68 publications in international scientific journals. He has also led several European projects focusing on patient safety, e-learning, and air quality research, demonstrating his commitment to advancing medical knowledge and practice.

Currently serving as the Vice-President of the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME), Dr. Balzan continues to influence European health policy, particularly in the areas of workforce development and addressing the health impacts of climate change.

D r. Arthur G. Felice, M.D. (Melit.), M.Sc. (Edin.), F.R.C.S.Ed., F.E.B.S. (Brussels), is recognized for his significant contributions to surgical education and assessment across Europe. He currently serves as the President of the European Board of Surgery and UEMS Division of General Surgery.

Dr. Felice has been a long-standing examiner and former Chairperson of the UEMS EBSQ General Surgery Examination, playing a vital role in maintaining high standards in surgical education. Additionally, he has been a key contributor to the development of European Training Requirements for General Surgery.

The European Union of Medical Specialists congratulated both recipients on their well-deserved honors and commends their ongoing dedication to advancing European medical standards.

“These awards highlight the significant contributions of Maltese medical professionals to the broader European healthcare landscape,” it said.
