AD applauds long overdue proposals on ground waterAlternattiva Demokratika has noted the declaration of Minister George Pullicino that henceforth water bowsers transporting ground water will have to be registered for this specific purpose. He further declared that boreholes in use will be metered.

Carmel Cacopardo AD spokesperson for sustainable development and local government said that AD applauds these long overdue proposals and hopes that their early implementation will be subject to strict monitoring by the Malta Resources Authority.

“However, if monitoring is not done in a meticulous manner and followed up by immediate enforcement action when necessary the current abusive tapping of ground water will never be brought under control,” concluded Cacopardo.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, added that it is positive that AD’s budget proposal for the metering of boreholes has been accepted by Government.

“Apart from registered farmers using water exclusively for irrigation, everyone possessing a borehole, including companies producing table water, should pay commercial water rates,” added Briguglio.
