The blood reserve of O Negative and A Negative has decreased. The National Blood Donation Service explained that these groups cannot be transfused from other blood groups. Other blood types are also currently needed.

The entire blood donation process takes about an hour, but the actual blood draw is only 8-10 minutes long, the Service said “It’s safe, simple, and saves lives.”

Did you know that men can donate blood every 3 months whilst women can do so every 4 months. The NBTS said that “your consistent donations are crucial in maintaining a steady blood supply.”

The Service also explained why a donor’s weight is checked before blood donation. This is because not more than 15% of total blood volume can be taken during a blood donation. Total blood volume depends on weight and height.

Even though a persons BMI is good, they might still not have enough blood volume for a donation to be allowed, the NBTS said

The Service continues to encourage Gozitans to please keep attending donation sessions to help the patients in need get the necessary blood in a timely manner.

The next session in Gozo will be, Tuesday, the 29th of October, from 1pm until 5pm, at the Xewkija Community Clinic.

The centre is located at the Xewkija Community Clinic, in Triq tall- Hamrija, between the Primary School and the Bocci Club.

Important notes from the National Blood Transfusion Service

• Bring your Maltese ID Card, driving licence or passport.

• Drink some water before your donation and have a light snack.

• Wear loose fitting clothes/sleeves.
