Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party expressed its disapproval of the comments made by Imam Mohamed El Sadi, the Muslim leader in Malta, on Bondiplus. Amongst other comments, El Sadi, in conformity with Sharia law, said that chopping off the hands of thieves is a “deserving punishment” and that he agrees with punishments – which may include death – for homosexuals.
AD said that although it noted that El Sadi was not proposing Sharia law for Malta, it was still shocking to hear such proposals, especially when El Sadi usually comes about as a moderate and well-meaning cleric.
Spokesperson on Civil Rights, Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer said, “AD respects respects the right for everyone to practice their religion , but we can never accept statements, which apart from being contrary to Maltese legislation, promote hatred, violence and a lack of respect towards the dignity of the human person.”
