A delegation of more than 100 people from Nadur, Gozo were hosted by the Commune of Baveno in the Province of Verbania in Italy (Lago Maggiore) to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the signing of the twinning agreement between Nadur and Baveno, in 2004.

Nadur was represented by Mayor Edward Said and the Local Councillors, together with residents of all ages, from children to the elderly. During their visit, the historic event of 20 years ago was remembered when the Mayor of Nadur Dr. Chris Said and the Mayor of Baveno Paolo Marchioni signed this twinning on behalf of the two localities.

The Nadur Local Council said that over the past 20 years “this twinning has been kept alive and active through various initiatives that varied from educational, cultural, sports exchanges and more.”

The Mayor of Baveno Alessandro Monti, speaking at the ceremony, emphasised that the Nadur and Baveno twinning is a clear example of how twinning should be kept alive and promised that his Council will continue to work in the years ahead so that more residents will benefit from this initiative.Mayor of Nadur Edward Said thanked the Mayors of Nadur and Baveno who had held office over the last 20 years, working together to ensure that this initiative flourished for the enjoyment of the hundreds of residents from both localities.

An extensive rehabilitation project was also presented to those present from both localities that will be carried out on one of the most beautiful squares on Lago Maggiore -named Arena di Nadur. It will include new paving (with the emblem of the two localities) and the planting of two trees.

During their visit to Baveno the group from Nadur had the opportunity to visit Milan, Turin, Superga, Locarno in Switzerland, Sonogno, Stresa and the islands of Lago Maggiore.

The Nadur Local Council has three twinnings, which, the Council said, are all being kept active – Cicciano in the Province of Naples, Baveno in the Province of Verbania and Zafferana Etnea in the Province of Catania.
