A limited-edition gold coin to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Republic of Malta has been issued by the Central Bank of Malta.

Acting Governor Mr Alexander Demarco, presented this exclusive coin to President Myriam Spiteri Debono, in a ceremony at the Central Bank of Malta.

The coin reverse carries a rendition of the commemorative tablet marking the foundation of the Republic on the 13th of December 1974. The tablet’s intricate design highlights the commemorative plaque of the Republic of Malta, and represents a historic marker displayed on the façade of the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta.

The Bank said that this artistic tribute underscores the enduring legacy of Malta’s journey as a republic and its rich historical narrative.

The gold coin weighs 31.10g, and measures 33mm in diameter. It has a face value of €100 and is produced in 0.999 gold and finished to proof quality. It was designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason. The gold version is limited to 65 pieces which were struck at the Royal Dutch Mint in the Netherlands.

The Bank has also issued the silver version that weighs 28.28g, and measures 38.61mm in diameter. It has a face value of €10 and is produced in 0.925 silver and finished to proof quality. The silver version is limited to 1000 pieces which were also struck at the Royal Dutch Mint in the Netherlands.

During her comments, the President remarked that the Central Bank’s history is intrinsically related to the history and development of the island. Acting Governor Demarco highlighted that the commemorative coin serves as a tribute to Malta’s historical journey and evolution into a modern republic. “This coin symbolises the achievements of the Maltese people over the past five decades.”
