An increase in the Carer at Home scheme subsidy, has been increased from €8,000 to €8,500 per year for those who employ a full-time carer.

Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea said that this builds on the increase that came into effect last year, when the subsidy was increased from €7,000 to €8,000.

It was explained that the Carer at Home scheme provides a financial subsidy to those elderly people who employ carers for their daily needs. This increase will help more than 1,100 seniors currently benefiting from this scheme, the Parliamentary Secretary said.

In addition, it allows more flexibility for those who employ part-time carers, as the subsidy is adjusted pro rata, depending on the number of hours worked.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that the subsidy is given directly to the beneficiaries, who receive this assistance in their bank accounts every month, from the time their application is approved. This process helps to ensure that the assistance arrives in an efficient and timely manner, while ensuring that each eligible person is given the necessary support.
