An assortment of “lover’s” cards are on display as part of the Valentine’s in Gozo programme of events. The cards have been set up in the Gozo Philatelic Society showcase on level -1 at Il-Hagar museum in Victoria.

Most of the over forty examples – mainly in English or Italian – go back to at least to the early part of the twentieth century. Some are simple photographs (not all colourised) but many are incredibly attractive, offering elaborate craftsmanship. The details are actually often in non-paper materials, such as string and needlework.

The museum highlighted that the messages themselves could even serve as material for social study. Besides “normal” slogans, there are also pleas such as “Why don’t you write?” The sizes themselves – from really minute – merit analysis.

Il-Hagar is located in St George’s Square and opens from 9am to 5pm seven days a week – without any entrance fee.

It is currently celebrating with a documentary exhibition the death centennial of a Gozitan polymath genius: Mons Giuseppi Farrugia, known as tal-Vers.
