A celebration of heritage and nature is being held at the 17th century knights-era watchtower at Ta’ Sopu on Gozo, during a free, family-friendly event.

The date to keep free is Sunday, the 16th of March between 10am and midday

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the historic watchtower with guided tours by Din l-Art Helwa at 10am and 10.30am.

For nature lovers there will be a scenic 1km guided walk with Nature Trust-FEE Malta to learn more about Gozo’s rich flora and fauna. This will be from 11am to midday.

Suitable footwear is recommended with a good grip and ankle support, bring a drink, waterproof clothing, sunblock and a charged mobile phone or torch to fully explore the tower.

Photos and video footage may be taken by event organisers and shared via social media and websites. If you do not wish to give your consent, please alert event tour guides on the day.

Children under 15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. There are no public toilet facilities at the tower.

The event is free of charge, but a suggested donation of 5 euros to either Din l-Art Helwa or Nature Trust – FEE Malta is welcomed on the day, or online via the NGO’s websites, the organisers said.

Restoration works on this Gozitan coastal watchtower were completed back in 2006, and carried out by Din l-Art Helwa, Malta’s National Trust, in partnership with Nadur Local Council, who now look after the building.

The tower, is located on the outskirts of the village of Nadur, and stands within a remote setting, surrounded by pristine garrigue habitat.

It overlooks the formidable Mistra Rocks and offers panoramic roof- views over the rugged coastline of the North-eastern coast of Gozo.

Ta’ Sopu Tower (also known as La Torre Nuova, Isopu, Nadur or San Blas Tower) was built in 1667 during the reign of Grandmaster Nicholas Cotoner and has a distinction no other can claim – its guns opened fire on the French invasion fleet on the 10th June 1798.
