The Malta Ranger Unit said that is has received several reports during the previous weeks about individuals going to the Bird Sanctuary (Comino), “to train their dogs (off leash) to flush birds on the garigue.”
The Rangers warned that “this disturbs the birds which are supposed to be in a haven. It’s the law to keep dogs leashed in ALL public spaces in Malta.”
“Although we acknowledge that this is not enforced in many places, we urge the public to understand the importance of adhering to such legislation inside a Bird Sanctuary, the MRU said.
The MRU said that its Rangers will, from now on, regularly go to Comino, “and will document any breach of such legislation inside the Bird Sanctuaries and report individuals to the Police.”
The Malta Ranger Unit concluded by informing dog owners that “ground nesting birds all over Malta have started to nest. At this time of the year we urge you to keep your dogs close and adhere to legislation.”
