Din l-Art Helwa has expressed its “deep concern” regarding the “recent threats and acts of intimidation directed at BirdLife Malta, a dedicated conservation organisation committed to the protection of our bird population and their habitats.”

The organisation said that “the alarming reports of online harassment, vandalism, and physical assaults against BirdLife Malta’s members are unacceptable and must be addressed with urgency.”

In a statement on Thursday, DLH stressed that “the ongoing hostility faced by BirdLife Malta is not merely an isolated incident; it reflects a broader culture of intolerance toward conservation efforts. Such actions undermine the essential work needed to protect our environment and its biodiversity.”

“The rhetoric employed by opposition groups that demonises those advocating for the protection of wildlife only serves to perpetuate a cycle of violence and fear,” the organisation said.

Executive President Patrick Calleja said “we stand in solidarity with BirdLife Malta and applaud their unwavering commitment to safeguarding nature despite the escalating threats they face. Their recent call for police protection highlights the serious challenges that conservationists encounter while performing their vital duties. It is imperative that the State takes a firm stance against intimidation and provides the necessary support to those working tirelessly to protect our natural heritage.”
