Din l-Art Helwa (DLH) said that it would like to “state for the record that it has not been given responsibility for the restoration of the Qbajjar Battery in Gozo.”
“Recent statements made by Opposition Spokesperson for Gozo Dr.Alex Borg on a local podcast may have been misleading in this regard,” said DLH.
The organisation said that “while DLH has been a staunch and persistent advocate for the restoration and guardianship of this historical site for many years, it was unfortunately never entrusted by the Government to undertake this project.”
DLH noted that “it has been reported in the press, however, that the Lands Authority authorised Heritage Malta to carry out the works on the Qbajjar battery in Gozo to ‘eliminate danger’ in the structure.”
The Qbajjar Battery is a significant heritage asset, constructed by the Knights of St. John in the early 18th century. DLH highlighted that “unfortunately, the Battery has fallen into a state of disrepair, suffering severe damage from the elements.”
DLH pointed out that local stakeholders, including the Zebbug Local Council, have “repeatedly raised concerns over the lack of action from the authorities, which have largely ignored numerous appeals for urgent intervention.”
Din l-Art Helwa said that it has “consistently expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Government to facilitate the restoration of this historical site.”
Executive President of DLH Patrick Calleja said, “our organisation boasts a proven track record in successfully executing similar restoration projects, demonstrating our readiness and capability to take action where needed. However, we have been met with persistent silence from the authorities, and our calls for collaboration have largely gone unanswered.”
He added that “as highlighted in recent press statements and articles, there are growing concerns that the Government’s delayed action may stem from potential commercial interests regarding the site. This raises serious questions about the preservation of our cultural heritage. Any decisions made concerning the Qbajjar Battery should prioritise its historical value and the public good rather than profit.”
Din l-Art Helwa concluded its statement by saying it “remains committed to ensuring that the Qbajjar Battery is restored to its rightful place within Gozo’s historical narrative and opened to the public for enjoyment and education.”
