St George’s Square, in Victoria, “the heart of our community, is becoming a symbol of chaos and disrespect,” said Opposition Spokesperson for Gozo Alex Borg.
Writing on social media, Borg stressed that there have been “a hundred cries, a thousand complaints, and zero action. It is time for the law to be enforced for everyone.”
The Opposition MP said that he had spoken to Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela with reference to Wednesday’s incident in the same square involving an ambulance that had to have assistance from the Police to enter, with tables and chairs having to be moved in order that the crew could attend a person who had been taken ill.
Borg said that the Minister had informed him of the need to introduce vehicles of a “suitable size” for the area. “It is a step forward, but not enough.”
“I appeal to the Ministry for Gozo and the MTA to take this situation seriously. A hundred masterplans are drawn up in vain if there is no enforcement,” said Alex Borg. “We have no reason to fear the word enforcement – it is the basis of respect so that the square can be enjoyed by everyone – including businesses.”
He stated that “if chaos reigns as we can see, over time it will no longer be a square to be enjoyed. The square belongs to the parishioners, not to those who think they can do whatever they want.”
Opposition Spokesperson for Gozo Alex Borg concluded by saying, “I will continue to bring the voice of the people to Parliament. With respect, but with determination.”

It might be added that that is an old photograph showing the square at it’s worst. The tables belong to Cafe Roza who no longer put them there, although it is mainly their tables next to ‘The Grapes’ that cause the current blockage to vehicles. That and the display stands which block the narrow street from It Tokk!
