“National Archaeological Discoveries” is the Europa stamp theme for 2025, emphasising the many facets of the Continent’s rich and varied past.
MaltaPost will issue a set of two stamps, in collaboration with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, Heritage Malta, and the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Malta.
These stamps show artefacts found within Phoenician rock-cut tombs excavated at Ghajn Klieb and Ghajn Qajjet in the outskirts of Rabat, in an area that served as a cemetery for the first Phoenicians who settled in Malta around 2,700 years ago.
The €1.91 stamp features pottery vessels used as drinking cups, jugs and storage jars. The €2.00 stamp portrays personal jewellery items including earrings, bangles, rings and beads found within large storage containers, together with cremated human remains.
The new set will be issued in a sheet of 11 stamps, with each stamp measuring 44 mm x 31 mm, with a comb perforation of 14.1 x 14.2 and bearing the Maltese Cross watermark. The sheets measure 158 mm x 150 mm and were produced in the offset process by Printex Limited. The issue consists of 22,000 stamps of the €1.91 denomination and 22,000 stamps of the €2.00 denomination.
Over the past decades, PostEurop, the association that represents European public postal operators, has been coordinating the annual issue of stamps bearing a common theme. The aim of issuing “Europa Stamps” is to build awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe and its common goals.
These latest stamps will be available from all Post Offices in Malta and Gozo from Friday, the 9th of May.
