To further strengthen Gozo’s electricity infrastructure more than 10km of new underground cables are being laid across the island of Gozo, as part of an extensive project to improve the reliability and capacity of the service.
This was announced during a visit to Gozo by Minister for Energy, Power and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli and Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri, accompanied by Enemalta’s Executive Chairman Eng. Ryan Fava and his team.
They said that last year, Enemalta commissioned seven new substations across Gozo and laid around 3.5km of medium voltage cables in Xaghra, Xlendi, Nadur and Victoria. “This work will continue in 2025, with five more substations already commissioned and with ambitious plans to lay 10 kilometres of new cables in seven localities: Kercem, Xaghra, Marsalforn, San Lawrenz, Sannat, Xewkija and Gharb.
“This major investment in Gozo’s energy infrastructure demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that residents and businesses in Gozo have reliable and modern electricity services. These works will continue to significantly strengthen the resilience of the national network and reduce service interruptions for the Gozitan people,” said Minister Miriam Dalli.
Minister Clint Camilleri stated that, “this significant investment in the electricity infrastructure in Gozo is a clear testament to the Government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Gozitan residents and we are ensuring that Gozo has a more stable and reliable electricity supply. This is another important step in strengthening the connectivity and resilience of our island. I thank Enemalta and its team for the valuable work they are doing, as well as the Ministry for Energy for their continued collaboration in this very important project for Gozo.”
The Ministers also visited Enemalta’s offices in Xewkija where they met with employees who are contributing to the improvement of the energy distribution network in Gozo.
Enemalta is currently installing 11 kilovolt underground cables in Zebbu? (Marsalforn) and Victoria, as part of a national initiative to improve connectivity between distribution centres and substations across Malta and Gozo.
It was explained that this infrastructure enhancement continues to increase the capacity, flexibility and resilience of the national network, with the aim of reducing disruptions and facilitating a faster service process when there are unplanned service interruptions.
Enemalta Executive Chairman Eng. Ryan Fava stressed the importance of this project, saying, “the addition of 10 kilometres of underground cables will strengthen our network, by improving the reliability, resilience and flexibility of the network so that in the event of a fault we can restore supply in the shortest possible time.”
