The Environment and Resources Authority confirmed on Wednesday morning that Ramla l-Hamra beach, Gozo, has its first turtle nest of the season, and the third for the Maltese Islands.
The ERA said that the nest was identified early today when the turtle was spotted by Nature Trust volunteers during a patrol.
Nature Trust – FEE Malta – Gozo Section said that following a false crawl by a turtle the night before, its volunteers were monitoring Ramla l-Hamra overnight, and at around 2am, the female turtle returned.
NTM officials immediately notified ERA – Environment & Resources Authority officials, and together they met on site to confirm the presence of a nest.
After the whole process was finished, the turtle was checked for a microchip. After no microchip was found one was inserted and the turtle was named Johanna.
Anyone wishing to volunteer, please send an email on turtle.ramla@gmail.com for more information.
ERA said that if anyone spots a turtle or nest to please call ERA on 2292 3500 or NTM on 9999 9505.
