Overcrowded beaches and lack of parking keeping persons with disabilities away - MFOPDAs Malta and Gozo’s beaches continue to draw large summer crowds, “the resulting congestion and lack of available parking are creating serious accessibility barriers for persons with disabilities,” said the Malta Federation of Organisations of Persons with Disability (MFOPD).

The MFOPD in a statement on Friday, said it is “deeply concerned about the growing difficulties faced by persons with disabilities and their families who simply wish to enjoy a day at the beach like everyone else.”

The Federation highlighted that “while not all persons with disabilities require designated accessible parking bays, the majority do need parking spaces that are close to the shore due to mobility limitations, hidden impairments, or the need to transport essential equipment.”

It insisted that “unfortunately, the current situation – where all available parking, including informal or potential parking areas, are consistently full – makes beach visits increasingly unfeasible and stressful for many.”

The Federation stressed that this exclusion is “not just a matter of convenience; it is a matter of equal opportunity and quality of life.”

It added that “the inability to find nearby parking effectively discourages families from even attempting to visit the beach, leading to further isolation during a season that should be marked by inclusion and recreation for all.”

MFOPD urged local authorities, beach management entities, and tourism stakeholders to address this pressing issue with immediate and practical solutions.

“Inclusion should not stop at the entrance of a beach. Access to leisure and public spaces, including Malta’s coastline, is a right-not a luxury-for persons with disabilities. Everyone deserves the chance to enjoy Malta’s beaches – not just those who can walk the distance or arrive early enough to find a space,” concluded the MFOPD.
