Prime Minister Robert Abela will be appointing Dr Helena Dalli as Acting President when President Dr Myriam Spiteri Debono is, among others, absent from Malta.

The Office of the Prime Minister said that this is being done in terms of article 49 of the Constitution of Malta, and in consultation with the Leader of the Opposition.

Dr Helena Dalli has been elected to the Maltese Parliament since 1996 and in every legislature, up until the one that began in 2017.

Among others, she was Minister for Industrial Relations, European Affairs, Equality and Civil Rights where from 2013 onwards she was a key catalyst pushing through many reforms and the introduction of a number of civil rights that have had a positive impact on society including minority groups.

In 2019 she was appointed as the first European Commissioner for Equality where she was instrumental in designing European strategies and laws to move the European Union closer to a Union of Equality. Dr Dalli was for many years a lecturer at the University of Malta teaching Sociology of Law.

She was the first Maltese woman to be appointed to the European Commission and in 2023, Helena Dalli was awarded the National Order of Merit.
