Nature Trust – Fee Malta volunteers from the Gozo section, who were on duty monitoring the nests at Ramla l-Hamra, Gozo, noticed a Loggerhead turtle nesting around 11:30pm last night.
This brings the total nest count up to 6 till now, with Ramla l-Hamra having 4 out of the 6 nests.
Volunteers immediately notified the coordinators, who in turn notified ERA officials, who went on site straight away.
After over two hours of trying in different areas of the beach, spanning the whole of the beach during different attempts, on her 6th attempt, she finally managed to dig a nesting chamber.
Upon finishing, she was checked for a microchip, as she didn’t have one, she was microchipped and named Angela.
The NGO said that it believes Angela is the same turtle that last week tried twice to nest but was not successful in those attempts. Turtles can hold on to eggs for a period of time.
Anyone wishing to volunteer, please send an email on turtle.ramla@gmail.com for more information.
The NGO appealed to the public to please help by keeping their distance and avoiding the use of artificial light in the area. “Let’s protect Malta’s marine life – one nest at a time!”
