As at end December 2009, the stock of licensed motor vehicles stood at 300,347. Of these, 76.3 per cent were private vehicles, while commercial vehicles made up 15.9 per cent.

New licences

New licences issued during the fourth quarter of 2009 amounted to 4,334. Private vehicles accounted for 3,503 new licences, or 80.8 per cent of the total. In the reference period, the majority of new licences were issued to private vehicles falling within ‘Class 1’ (<1300 cc). This class accounted for 1,638 new licences, while vehicles in ‘Class 2’ (1301-1449 cc) accounted for 419. Newly-licensed ‘new’ motor vehicles amounted to 1,474, or 34.0 per cent of the total, while newly-licensed ‘used’ motor vehicles came up to 2,860, or 66.0 per cent of the total.

Exported, scrapped and garaged

In the fourth quarter of 2009, 31 vehicles were exported. Scrapped vehicles numbered 1,103, of which 53.5 per cent were ‘Class 1’ vehicles (<1300 cc). Garaged vehicles (see definition in methodological notes) amounted to 3,710, or 76.6 per cent of all vehicles which were no longer on the road in the period under review.

Annual perspective

In 2009, newly-licensed vehicles totalled 18,813 – 7,133 new and 11,680 used vehicles – an increase of 5,717, or 43.7 per cent over 2008. Exported and scrapped vehicles amounted to 91 and 4,015 respectively, while 11,436 vehicles were garaged. Therefore, in 2009, 15,542 vehicles were taken off the road.
