The PN General Convention closed with a speech by the new Leader Alex Borg, after entering his office at Central House

“The hardest thing was to say this is the moment. I could have held back and not done what I was called to do. But instead, I chose to say yes. I recognised that this truly is the moment – the people’s moment. The moment for us all to come together for a better Malta and Gozo.”

The new PN Leader Alex Borg said this in his first speech to those who came to meet him this morning at the Central House of the Nationalist Party, during the closing of the PN General Convention which officially brought to an end the process of the election for the new Party Leader.

The new PN Leader said that it is only the PN that, at this moment, can give hope to all Maltese and Gozitans, adding that this is the Party that will go to the people, whoever they may be. He said that “with everyone, regardless of whether they are red or blue, he wants to build the history of the future of our country together.”

Alex Borg also pledged to work shoulder to shoulder with Adrian Delia and with the entire Parliamentary Group.

He had just been symbolically handed the keys of the office of the Leader of the Nationalist Party by his predecessor Bernard Grech, in order for him to now formally begin his role as Leader of the PN.

Earlier, during an interview on the programme Analizi on NET TV, the new PN Leader said that he wants the PN to “truly be the Party of the nation. An inclusive party, bringing everyone together. A party of the people and with the people.”

He thanked those who entrusted him with their confidence but also appealed to those who did not vote for him, calling on them to join him so that together they can continue to strengthen the PN, which is the hope of thousands of people. He said that in recent weeks we have seen new enthusiasm not only among members – who were the protagonists of this story, giving their trust to the youth – but also among many who are not PN members, and even among Labourites who are dissatisfied with the current situation and are seeking different leadership.

The energy comes from these people who continue to believe in the PN’s vision, said PN Leader Alex Borg.

Alex Borg thanked Bernard Grech for his work over the past five years, Mario Callus who led the PN Electoral Commission in recent weeks, PN Secretary General Charles Bonello, all the workers and volunteers of the Partit Nazzjonalista, and especially NET Media and NET News who yesterday did invaluable work. He thanked the Parliamentary Group – the faces of the Party, and the members who find in the Central House their home.

Alex Borg spoke about young people and said that the Nationalist Party must become their “natural home” – a party different from the Labour Party and one that today has new opportunities to offer them, not only the great achievements of the past. The new PN Leader said that the PN is the Party of the future for young people who today in our country are facing challenges that undermine their quality of life.

He said that he will be ensuring the strengthening of the Party’s media, which in recent years, thanks to the workers who give their all, has made great strides, and he promised that he will work with determination to deliver on what he promised during the campaign.

He reiterated his commitment that measures will be implemented to ease the challenges so that young people can become homeowners. Alex Borg also said he wants to address as soon as possible the injustices that exist in pensions and insisted he will demand justice and equality for our pensioners.

During the interview Alex Borg also referred to the fact that Robert Abela wants to try to destabilise the country by calling an early election now that the PN has a new Leader. “This is Abela’s style – putting his interests before those of the Maltese and Gozitan people, because for Abela what matters is to cling to the seat of power.”

Alex Borg said that he wants to “quickly find a much better balance than the current one in the environment, particularly in light of a Government that, instead of marrying progress with the environment, has managed to make them clash.”

The PN Leader said that today we are suffering many consequences of the “short-sighted vision of a Labour Government that built our country’s economy on population growth.” He said we need to be able to build an economy with long-term vision, as previous Nationalist Governments did, creating economic niches that remain today as solid pillars of our country’s economy.

Alex Borg also thanked Adrian Delia, who publicly congratulated him this morning, saying he is certain that members have great respect for him, while promising that together with Adrian, they will continue to work together for the good of the country and of the Nationalist Party.

The President of the PN Executive Committee Joseph Grech, in the absence of the President of the General Council Mark Anthony Sammut, delivered a short message during the close of this Convention, calling on everyone to “roll up their sleeves so that together, and built on the great enthusiasm that emerged during this campaign, the PN can continue to grow stronger and reaches victory in the next general election – a victory that will belong to the entire Maltese and Gozitan people.”
