The Gozo Regional Council recently hosted a cultural event at the historic Xewkija Windmill, during which Professor Joe Friggieri promoted two of his latest works through readings and reflections, while also announcing the generous donation of five of his previously published books to the local councils of Gozo.
These books, an assortment of short stories and poetry books, will be distributed by the councils across their respective libraries, ensuring that communities throughout the island have direct access to Friggieri’s writings.
The gathering brought together local councils, cultural organisations, and members of the public in recognition of one of Malta’s most respected authors and intellectuals.
Professor Friggieri, who has long maintained strong ties with Gozo, expressed appreciation to the publishers, to those who attended, and to Dr Samuel Azzopardi, President of the Gozo Regional Council, for supporting the initiative. The programme included selected readings and a musical interlude, which enriched the evening’s literary atmosphere.
In his speech, Dr Azzopardi thanked Professor Friggieri for his generosity and acknowledged the collaboration of the local councils in making these works accessible to the Gozitan public. He underlined the continuing relevance of Friggieri’s writings, remarking that “literature is everything today.”
The Gozo Regional Council extends its gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of this event. The occasion not only honoured Professor Friggieri’s achievements but also reaffirmed the Council’s mission to strengthen Gozo’s cultural life through literature, education, and community engagement.
