Momentum has unveiled a bold new proposal to recognise the invaluable contribution of Malta’s volunteers through a national tax credit scheme.

It said that every year, thousands of Maltese and Gozitans dedicate countless hours to their communities in sports, festas, charities, animal welfare, environmental work, and many other causes.

Momentum said it believes that this commitment deserves more than applause it deserves genuine recognition.

Momentum spokesperson Matthew Agius said that “the tax credit is a simple and fair way for the nation to give back to those who give so much of themselves. It is not a payment, but a national gesture of gratitude that puts real value back in the volunteer’s pocket at the end of the year.”

He explained that under the proposal, volunteers who dedicate their time to a registered voluntary or charitable organisation in Malta would be eligible for a tax credit at the end of the tax year. The organisation would confirm the number of hours contributed, for instance, with the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations, ensuring a fair and transparent process.

Agius added that “this isn’t just about taxes it is about strengthening the soul of Malta. Volunteers make what being Maltese really means. From the festas and football clubs to environmental NGOs, scouts, and religious organisations, they all depend on volunteers. They are the heartbeat that keeps our communities alive. Through this initiative, we want to send a clear message that Malta values you, and Malta thanks you.”

“Momentum believes that this tax credit will not only reward the dedication of volunteers but also encourage more people to get involved, strengthen voluntary organisations, and foster a stronger, more caring Malta,”

Agius concluded that “by formally recognising the spirit of mutual help, the initiative aims to build a community where everyone who gives their time and energy feels valued and appreciated.”
