Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg, said that the latest survey results published today, like the previous ones, show that the PN “cannot afford to lose the momentum it has built.”
Speaking at the political event in front of the PN Headquarters this morning, Borg emphasised both his and the PN’s responsibility at this moment: “We must be careful with every step we take and truly show that we are the party of the nation – a party that feels the pulse of all Maltese and Gozitans.”
Alex Borg said that while the Labour Party does nothing but attack him and the PN and fails to come up with a single proposal, the PN will keep focusing on its own ideas and how to lead the country forward, ensuring that no one is left behind.
On unplanned population growth, Alex Borg said the problem stems from a lack of long-term planning, “as the Government of Robert Abela and Clyde Caruana built the economy on the importation of cheap, exploited third-country labour.”
On hospitals, he recalled that although the PN, through Adrian Delia under Bernard Grech’s leadership, won the case to reclaim the hospitals, nothing has yet been done to ensure hospitals can handle the rising number of patients.
Alex Borg said the solution lies in a new economic model focused on quality sectors offering decent wages. This should follow a labour market study identifying where foreign workers are genuinely needed so that Malta’s economy becomes based on quality, not quantity.
On the justice system, while expressing full confidence in the judiciary and condemning the attacks against judges who are doing their duty – especially by those responsible for the sector itself – Borg stressed the need for wide consultation to make the Courts more efficient.
Regarding case delays, he said Malta needs more judges, but not only that. Support staff must also increase so that the full workload can be managed, and additional working space should be provided. Borg also reminded that the long-promised new Court in Gozo, shelved since 2013, remains unfulfilled. “A new Nationalist Government would make this a top priority,” he said, noting that the Labour Government has given up to the point that it no longer even mentions the project in the Budget.
Borg said that in the past week he attended Regional Assemblies held across various localities as part of the PN’s administrative General Council, which will take place next week. He witnessed first-hand the renewed energy among the PN’s grassroots.
Alex Borg announced that starting next week, he will meet each committee individually. He urged committee members to carry this enthusiasm into the streets and towns of Malta and Gozo, convincing people and bringing them closer to the PN.
Borg stated that Malta needs a long-term transport policy with a mass transit system agreed upon now, not on the eve of an election. He mentioned that this was also discussed during his recent meeting with the Prime Minister at the PN Headquarters, where he suggested a cross-party long-term transport plan agreed between Government and Opposition for a project that will take several years to complete.
He also referred to connectivity between Malta and Gozo, noting that the three ferries still in use today were all built under a Nationalist Government, “while the only addition under Labour has been the second-hand Nikolaos ferry, which lacks basic accessibility.”
He said a clear plan is needed, and the PN has already put forward a concrete proposal for investment in four new ferries with EU funding. Borg urged the Government to implement the report commissioned by Nationalist MEP Peter Agius on this issue.
