Gozitan Luke Said, a recent B.Sc.(Hons) graduate in Geosciences and Physics, is joining the Department of Geosciences at the University of Malta as a Research Support Officer.

The Department explained that Mr Said will use his geophysics experience during his undergrad studies to the department’s ongoing work in advancing seismic monitoring and analysis. Mr Said will also read for a M.Sc. with the same department.

The project, supervised, by Dr Matthew Agius will focus on enhancing local earthquake detection and location by developing new tools, and on updating the earthquake catalogue for Malta using a combination of single and multi-station seismic analysis tools.

The data from the Malta Seismic Network operated by the Seismic Monitoring and Research Group within the Department of Geosciences will be analyse using new software tools that will be developed and tested.

The Department of Geosciences explained that the ultimate goal is to improve and strengthen the department’s capacity to monitor and interpret local seismic activity, contributing to Malta’s growing expertise in regional seismological research.

This project is financed by the University of Malta’s Research Excellence Fund which supports outstanding research projects across diverse academic fields.

The University said that the project will be carried out over two years starting this year. The project was selected through a competitive process based on evaluations by independent external peer reviewers.

It was explained that the scheme, administered by the Research Fund Committee, aims to promote high-quality, innovative research at the University of Malta.
