At 7,680 registered unemployment in December 2009 increased by 1,307 persons when compared to the corresponding month in 2008 and by 92 over the previous month.

In December 2009, the number of registered unemployed persons amounted to 7,680. This included 6,879 persons in Malta and 801 in Gozo. Accordingly, in the twelve months to December 2009, the persons registering for work in Malta increased by 1,224 (21.6 per cent), whilst those registering for work in Gozo went up by 83 (11.6 per cent).

Over the same period, the number of men on the unemployment register increased by 982 (19.6 per cent), whilst the number of women went up by 325 (23.7 per cent).

The data indicate that, in the twelve months to December 2009, the registered unemployed persons increased across all the age groups. In percentage terms, however, the two age groups on the margin of the age distribution (persons aged 45 and over and the persons aged under 20), reported an increase of 31.5 per cent and 25.7 per cent respectively in the rate of registrations on an annual basis.

In December 2009, the number of persons whose duration of unemployment was under 20 weeks increased by 513 when compared to December 2008.

In the month under review, there were 449 persons with a disability on Part 1 of the unemployment register. This indicates that, on a year-on-year basis, the number of persons with disability registering for work increased by 150.

Men are registering for jobs within the categories of Service workers, shop and market sales workers, and Craft and related trade workers. On their part, women are registering for jobs within the categories of Clerks, Service workers and shop and market sales workers.
