On Sunday, Rangers from the Malta Ranger Unit reported that sewage was “going into the valley/green fields, just outside Victoria, limits of Xaghra.”

The MRU said that as seen in the video, paper and human feces were seen going with the stream of runoff, spreading across the area.

The MRU noted that the ERA – Environment & Resources Authority Gozo section were “quick to answer the report and are taking action together with the Water Services Corporation.” The MRU writing on Facebook, also noted that “this overflow is from the nearby WSC pumproom.”

The Rangers added that “this is very close to the site where e-coli was detected not long ago” in a waterway on the outskirts of Victoria where ducks and geese were found dead.

“If you come across similar thing when out and about in nature, please always report it immediately to the Authorities on their relevant helplines. All the Authorities, although closed over the holidays, have an emergency/enforcement number operating 24/7,” the MRU said.

The Malta Ranger Unit concluded by saying that “our work in Gozo continues. Without a patrolling Environmental Protection Unit Police on the island, we are upping the game during 2026 – Eco-Gozo A Better Gozo – not so better without EPU Police.”
