An exhibition at the Gozo National Archives focusing on Gozo and the Second World War and its impact on the Gozitan community, has been inaugurated by Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri.

This first exhibition in Gozo on the Second World War includes documents, photographs and original objects that provide a first-hand perspective of the experiences and suffering that Gozitans went through during the global conflict.

The Minister stated that “this is a wonderful and very interesting exhibition of the Second World War on the island of Gozo which gathers great information, unique documentation from Charles Bezzina as well as his father Frank who throughout their lives documented stories, events and objects regarding this period in Gozo.”

He added that there is “exclusive information noted that in 1938, Charles Bezzina’s father, Frank, was penfriend with Manfred, son of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel.”

Camilleri said that “the Gozo Archives plays an essential role in preserving the collective memory and historical heritage of the island. Moreover, in a country that today enjoys peace and security, it is important that people understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by our fathers in times of challenge and uncertainty.”

It was explained that the exhibition recalls the great challenges that the Gozitan and Maltese people had to face, including loss of life, destroyed homes and separated families. It is also a testament to the courage and solidarity that the Gozitans showed when they opened their homes to the Maltese who were fleeing the fury of the war.

Although many Gozitans suffered from hunger, they still collected the grain they had stored to help the population in Malta who were in a critical situation. This is a clear reflection of the spirit of national unity and of the continuous contribution of Gozo to the rest of the country, said Camilleri.

Minister Camilleri thanked Charles Bezzina for his contribution, particularly for his collection of documents and historical material which is now being preserved in the Archives and exhibited to the public. All the items on display as well as Charles Bezzina’s household items will be donated to the Gozo Archives during his lifetime and after his death.

The Gozo minister concluded by saying that this new exhibition will continue to enhance the knowledge of future generations about the important role Gozo played during the Second World War.
