On Friday, Rangers from the Malta Ranger Unit in Gozo were patrolling the Natura2000 site in Wied il-Ghasri, when they heard wader callers.
The Rangers said that “at a site notorious for such illegalities, an active clap net was seen as well as live Golden Plover decoys in cages and plastic ones.” The Rangers noted that the season for trapping closed over two weeks ago.
The Gozo Police were immediately alerted by the Rangers, arriving shortly afterwards and went up to the site located at the boundary of the protected Natura2000 site.
The Police confiscated nets, decoys, speakers, the electronic caller and the live birds.
The Malta Ranger Unit advised that this site was reported for the identical crime by the Unit in mid-January 2024, also during closed season.
The Rangers said that on this latest incident the trapper, who had left the site, lost all his equipment and birds. The birds were handed over by the Police to the Wild Birds Regulation Unit .
The Malta Ranger Unit expressed their thanks to the Officers from the Gozo Police “for their swift assistance.”
The MRU once again highlighted the report to Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, who is also responsible for hunting, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli, ERA – Environment & Resources Authority, as well as Eco-Gozo A Better Gozo – “not so better without Environmental Police….”
