The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) said that it is currently conducting a search and rescue (SAR) operation in Cirkewwa after reports were received of a 13-year old girl who was swept into the sea yesterday evening.

First alerted through a 112 call, the Rescue Coordination Centre deployed an Armed Forces of Malta helicopter together with maritime assets. The AFM said that personnel from the Civil Protection Department and the Malta Police Force also assisted by conducting additional searches from land of the area.After extensive coastal and area searches, the operation was stood down late in the night. The AFM said adverse weather conditions, including rough seas and strong winds, continue to create challenging circumstances for all responders involved.

Despite these difficulties, search efforts resumed this morning at first light, said the AFM.

The girl was with her father and older brother when she and her brother were swept into the sea by the waves at Cirkewwa. Media reports say that her brother was rescued by their father.
