An insulin pump (artificial pancreas) service has been launched in Gozo. This service will improve the quality of life and reduce complications for children and young people living with Type 1 diabetes.

Announcing the launch, Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela said that, “today we have taken another important step for Gozitans in the treatment of diabetes in our country.”

The Minister noted that this is part of an investment of almost €2 million in equipment and employee training over a two-year period. Dr Abela went on to explain that the ‘Tandem t:slim x2’ insulin pump works in synergy with the CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitors) which are already provided by the Government with an investment of €10 million. This is a technology that offers insulin therapy automatically and constantly.

The Health Minister also announced the establishment of a dedicated clinic at the Gozo General Hospital. A 24/7 contact centre service has also been established that will offer advice and assistance related to this equipment.

Dr Abela said that to date, 9 patients under the age of 18 are already benefiting from this investment. The service has already been extended to patients who develop diabetes after surgery to remove the total pancreas. He stressed that the Government’s goal is that in the future the service can be extended to cover all patients with Type 1 diabetes.

“Today we have fulfilled another promise. Today’s investment is another step in favour of Gozitan patients. We are not only offering a revolution in the treatment of diabetes, but we are also offering support and peace of mind for parents. We are committed to continuing to offer the best care of the highest quality to Gozitan and Maltese patients,” concluded Dr Abela.
