At 7,758 registered unemployment in January 2010 increased by 770 persons when compared to the corresponding month in 2009 and by 78 over the previous month.

In January 2010, the number of registered unemployed persons amounted to 7,758. This included 6,972 persons in Malta and 786 in Gozo. Accordingly, in the twelve months to January 2010, the persons registering for work in Malta increased by 752 or 12.1 per cent, whilst those registering for work in Gozo went up by 18 or 2.3 per cent. Over the same period, the number of men on the unemployment register increased by 624 or 11.6 per cent, whilst the number of women went up by 146 or 9.2 per cent.
When compared to December 2009, the number of registered unemployed increased by 78 in January 2010. These were distributed into an increase of 93 persons in Malta and a decrease of 15 persons in Gozo.
Between January 2009 and January 2010, all age groups show an increase in the number of registered unemployed. The larger year on year changes were reported amongst persons aged 45 years and over. In fact, there was an increase of 434 registered unemployed in this age group. In the twelve months to January 2010, those persons who had been registering for work for under 20 weeks increased by 51 or 1.5 per cent. On the other hand, the persons whose duration of unemployment exceeded the 52 weeks went up by 387 or 17.4 per cent.
This release also provides information on the occupations being sought by the unemployed persons. Among men, occupations related to sevices and trades were the most common, whereas women tended to seek jobs which were clerical or service-oriented.
Registered Unemployment Rate: August 2009
In August 2009, the registered unemployment rate stood at 4.9 per cent of the labour supply. On a gender basis, the unemployment rate for men stood at 5.5 per cent, while the unemployment rate for women stood at 3.6 per cent.
The long-term unemployment rate, referring to people who had been registering for work for more than twelve months, stood at 1.6 per cent.
The unemployment rate among older workers (45 and over) stood at 4.9 per cent while the unemployment rate among young people (under 25) stood at 6.1 per cent.
