The full-time gainfully occupied population in September 2009 totalled 144,514, down by 1,806 when compared to the previous year and by 35 over the previous month.

In the twelve-month period to September 2009, the administrative records of the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC) showed a drop of 1,806 persons in the full-time gainfully occupied population. Concurrently, the number of registered unemployed increased by 1,425.

When compared to the preceding month, the full-time gainfully occupied population dropped by 35 in September 2009. On their part, the registered unemployed increased by 78.

During September 2009 the labour supply stood at 152,035. The gainfully occupied population amounted to 144,514, whereas the registered unemployed amounted to 7,521.

Full-time Employment

In the twelve months to September 2009 there was a decrease of 783 persons, or 1.9 per cent, in full-time jobs within the public sector, and another drop of 1,023 persons, or 1.0 per cent, in full-time jobs within the private sector.

During the same period, the number of full-time gainfully occupied persons in manufacturing [NACE 15-37] fell by 1,795 or 7.9 per cent, although it increased by 155 or 0.8 per cent when compared to the previous month.

Over a twelve-month period to September 2009, the following service activities reported an increase in terms of full-time employment: other business activities [NACE 74] (+675 persons), health and social work activities [NACE 85] (+202 persons), and recreational, cultural, and sporting activities [NACE 92] (+189 persons). By contrast, hotels and restaurants registered a decrease in employment [NACE 55] (-625 persons).

From August to September 2009, the main increases in the full-time gainfully occupied population were recorded in education [NACE80] (+252) and manufacturing [NACE 15-37], as mentioned above. The most significant drops were registered in hotels and restaurants [NACE 55] (-199) and construction [NACE 45] (-95).

Part-time Employment

Meanwhile, the number of registered part-time jobs for the month under review totalled 49,968, an increase of 2,050 with respect to the corresponding month in the preceding year.

In the twelve months to September 2009, the main increase in part-time employment took place in education [NACE 80] (+751 persons) and wholesale and retail trade [NACE 50-52] (+401 persons). On the other hand, the number of part-timers within public administration and defence [NACE 75] dropped by 82 over the same period.

From August to September 2009, the number of persons employed on a part-time basis dropped by 325.
