Gozo: ADPD condemns senseless cruel killing of protected Kestrel ADPD-The Green Party, has condemned the killing of a Kestrel by a trapper in Gozo, who ”cruelly and coldly crushed a Common Kestrel, a species protected by law, and documented by CABS in a chilling video.

Mark Zerafa, of The Green Party said, “we condemn without any reservation this act of senseless cruelty to this bird and the destruction of the Maltese fauna, our natural heritage. This incident clearly shows the need for more surveillance in the countryside through more specialised police with all the support and resources they require.”

“Despite what the law provides, as well as warnings from the European Commission against trapping, the government has continued to allow this practice and even validates it by issuing new licenses; this gives a sense of impunity to the many trappers and hunters, who feel that they are above the law.”

He went on to say that ”the Government should immediately give priority to biodiversity, environmental protection and international laws and treaties instead of partisan interests. The government would speak in beautiful words about Malta’s natural heritage, for example in the Malta Vision 2050. But between words and deeds there is a sea of ??struggle.”

“We acknowledge with satisfaction the immediate action of the police who are working under great pressure to try to cope with the blatant violation of environmental laws,” Mark Zerafa concluded
