Statement from Diocese of Gozo below – The Safeguarding Commission Gozo has said in a statement that, ”the recent media report ”alleging that a priest assisted in the withdrawal of an accusation in a criminal case was never reported to the Commission.”

The Commission said that it is ”monitoring this case and actively ensuring that all safeguarding principles will be upheld.”

Since its inception in 2022, the Safeguarding Commission Gozo said it has ”diligently handled all cases reported and referred them to the competent civil authorities.”

It said that ”we encourage anyone who has experienced abuse to seek support through the appropriate channels.”

The Commission concluded by saying that it remains ”fully committed to fostering a culture of accountability, safeguarding, and care within the community.”

Diocese of Gozo statement

The Diocese of Gozo writing on Facebook said that it ”always takes all allegations involving minors very seriously.”

The Diocese said that it ”understands that such cases raise legitimate questions among the public.”

The Diocese continued by sayind that it ”affirms that as soon as it became aware of the content of the court judgment, it began to gather and analyse all possible information and take the necessary professional advice to determine the possibility of further steps.”

”This process is being carried out with care and responsibility, and with respect for all persons involved.” the Diocese said.

The Diocese concluded by saying that it is ”committed to protecting vulnerable persons above all else.”
