The Maltese Episcopal Conference, the Catholic Cultural Heritage Commission and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

The Church said that this historical agreement clarifies the respective mandates of the Commission and the Superintendence in regulating ecclesiastical heritage within the framework of the Cultural Heritage Act (Cap. 445).

The heritage covered by this MoU includes all cultural property belonging to, destined for, or used by the Church – ranging from churches and chapels to movable religious artefacts. Through this MoU, the protection of ecclesiastical heritage is strengthened by ensuring that the Commission and Superintendence collaborate effectively and consistently in fulfilling this responsibility.

The Church said that the spirit of the MoU is therefore rooted in active communication and a shared understanding that Catholic cultural property consists of living artefacts.

All parties affirmed a common commitment to safeguard both the tangible and intangible dimensions of this patrimony, ensuring that present and future generations can continue to encounter, appreciate, and deepen their spiritual values through this invaluable cultural inheritance.
