Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg said that ”the time has come to consider a fixed-term date for the general election so that it is not turned into a political game.”

During a political activity from the Qrib Taghkom series in Qrendi, marking the 40th anniversary since the opening of the PN Club in the village, Alex Borg said that the uncertainty created by the Government in recent months regarding the election date, and how it sought excuses to call an early election – first by creating what it called a “crisis” over the appointment of the Chief Justice, then by attempting to blame the Opposition, and later by trying to convince people that Malta was in crisis because of the war in Iran.

He said the time has come for our country to consider a fixed-term election model, as exists in the United Kingdom and the United States, among others, where the election date is set and not used as a political game by those in power. Alex Borg said this would provide certainty to the people instead of creating uncertainty whenever someone in government hints at an early election.

He added that in recent days the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party Alex Agius Saliba dismissed speculation about an early election, but now one must see whether Robert Abela will cast aside his own Deputy Leader as he has done with others.

Alex Borg said that despite all this, the Nationalist Party is prepared and ”united as one team for the next election.” He said the party has a group of candidates and MPs ”working day and night to give the country a new government that puts people first.”

The Leader of the PN said the measures being developed by the whole team are intended to ensure that young people have the hope of building a brighter future in their own country – where they can buy their own home, build an exciting career, and enjoy time with their families.

The Leader of the PN said we cannot continue living in a country divided into “us and them,” and that our country is too small to remain divided. Alex Borg said Malta must be a country that ”brings together everyone’s talent and energy so that we can truly be the best.”

He insisted that the Nationalist Party has a ”serious plan for mass transport and, within its first 100 days in government, will begin work on a modern system that gives people back the time they are currently wasting stuck in traffic.”

The Leader of PN also spoke about other measures aimed at improving people’s lives and said that in the coming year Maltese and Gozitans will face a crucial decision about what future they want for children and young people, what country they want for the elderly, and what future they want for workers.

He stressed that just as the Nationalist Party was determined to give Malta its Independence, and determined to secure our country’s place in Europe, ”today it is equally determined to give direction to our country and a better future to Maltese and Gozitans.”
