The number of passengers and vehicles crossing between Malta and Gozo were down in the first quarter, as well as trips made.
According to today’s data from the National Statistics Office, today shows that during the first quarter of this year, a total of 9,579 trips were carried out between Malta and Gozo, carrying a total of 1,511,708 passengers.
However, the NSO noted that the total number of trips, vehicles and passengers decreased by 9.0, 5.8 and 1.1%, when compared to the corresponding quarter in 2025, the NSO said.
March was the busiest month recording a total of 3,678 trips or 38.4% of total trips for the quarter.
A total of 1,321,358 passengers travelled between Mgarr and Cirkewwa during the fist quarter, this was an increase of 0,5% when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025.
The highest number of passengers was recorded in March – 517,824 or 39.2% of the total for the quarter. When compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year, the number of vehicles decreased by 5,8%, totalling 445,351.
There were 7,743 trips in the first quarter, a decrease of 5.7% over the same period in 2025. March registered the highest number of trips – 2,956 or 38.2% of total trips for the quarter.
During the first quarter vehicle traffic originating from Mgarr terminal was highest on Sundays and Mondays, passenger traffic was busiest on Sundays and Saturdays.
The NSO said that from the Cirkewwa terminal, both vehicle and passenger traffic was busiest on Fridays and Saturdays.
During the first quarter of this year, a total of 1,836 trips were carried out between Mgarr and Valletta carrying a total of 190,350 passengers. When compared to same quarter in 2025, the number of trips decreased by 20.6% and the number passengers decreased by 11.4%, the NSO said.
It noted that March registered the highest number of trips – 722 or 30.3% of total trips for the quarter and the highest number of passengers – 86,121 or 45.2% for the quarter.
