Luke Said, PN candidate for Gozo, has spoken out about today’s decision by the Planning Authority Appeals Tribunal to approve the demolition of the only British barracks in Gozo, situated at Fort Chambray
”I was following the tribunal proceedings when the news came through: the Planning Authority Appeals Tribunal had approved the destruction of one of the oldest examples of married quarters in Malta, and arguably beyond, and a site listed among Europe’s most endangered heritage sites by Europa Nostra.”
Said added that this is ”such a disheartening day for all activists and volunteers, for all of us who work for the greater good of the island.”
He went on to say that ”this is a building I have fought for, its protection, and its thoughtful integration into wider projects that respect our history rather than erase it. Once again, we are choosing short-term development over long-term heritage.”
Luke Said also noted this morning’s Planning Authority approval for an apartment block” just 180 metres from the Ggantija Temples, within the UNESCO buffer zone.”
”This morning I attended the hearing to voice my opposition, but the public was given no opportunity to speak,” stated Said ”It’s deeply disappointing to see, once again, decisions that erode what makes Gozo unique being taken with the blessing of the very authorities meant to protect it.”
”Kudos to the Gozo NGOs, Ghawdix, Wirt Ghawdex and Din L-Art Helwa – Ghawdex for the continued fight to protect this island,” he said.
Luke Said concluded by saying, ”I will continue to speak up and fight to protect what makes Gozo worth preserving.”
