Chairperson of ADPD-The Green Party Sandra Gauci and spokesperson and candidate for the 13th electoral district Luke Caruana, said that ”the Fort Chambray case is just one example of the reign of greed in our country.”
In a statement on Saturday, they insisted that, ”we need to cherish what makes us Maltese and show greater respect for our cultural identity. What has shaped and shaped us deserves to be protected: the history of our country is the history of all of us and the memories of the past should not be given up for speculative purposes for the enjoyment of a few while we and future generations emerge as big losers, deprived of what reminds us of who we are and where we come from.”
They said, “you have to see it to believe how the Planning Authority gave its blessing to two sacrileges against all of our heritage. It was not enough to approve the construction of apartments and garages in the buffer zone around Ggantija – a unique site and considered a world cultural heritage by UNESCO. It showed no remorse, because shortly afterwards, and almost unanimously, it approved another heinous assault on Fort Chambray.”
They argued that this is ”a terrible project that will demolish a substantial part of the fort to make way for a hotel and commercial complex. Ironic and at the same time mournful how we build hotels to accommodate tourists, but to do this, we dismantle what attracts tourists to our country. We have more than enough hotels and we don’t need any more.”
“Why is our culture and heritage worth anything when it’s all about profit for the few? Apparently, nothing,” stated Gauci and Caruana.
