The Gozo Regional Development Authority (GRDA) has welcomed the introduction of new direct high-speed maritime links connecting Gozo with Bugibba and Sliema, complementing the existing service to Valletta.
Prime Minister Robert Abela launched the service on Tuesday morning, in the presence of Transport Minister Chris Bonett, Transport Malta Chief Executive Kurt Farrugia and Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri.
The GRDA said in a statement that ”this important development marks a significant step forward in improving accessibility and connectivity between Gozo and Malta.”
It said that improved maritime links have long been identified as a key priority in the Regional Strategy for Gozo, which outlines a vision for a ”more connected, resilient and economically vibrant island. The addition of new routes to Bugibba and Sliema strengthens the transport network, offering greater flexibility, shorter journey times and more convenient options for residents, workers and visitors alike.”
The GRDA noted that diversified entry and exit points are essential to support Gozo’s economic growth, particularly in sectors such as tourism, trade and services. By expanding connectivity beyond Valletta, these new routes are expected to better distribute passenger flows, reduce congestion and encourage more balanced regional development.
Furthermore, improved accessibility is crucial to improving the quality of life for Gozitan residents, facilitating easier travel, access to essential services, and stronger social and economic links between the island, it said.
The Authority reiterated that ”sustained investment in multimodal transport solutions remains central to achieving the long-term objectives of the Gozo Regional Strategy. The introduction of these new fast catamaran routes is a positive and tangible example of policy translating into action.”
The GRDA concluded by saying that it ”looks forward to continued collaboration with stakeholders to further strengthen connectivity and ensure that Gozo continues to develop as a dynamic and attractive region for both residents and visitors.
